day 2 – cock crow

We thought long and hard whether or not to join the Borobudur sunrise tour. At Rp115,000 per person (special rates for Manohara guests) it wasn’t actually chump change. We could always wait for 0600 when the site opened its doors to the general public. In the end we thought what the heck. It ain’t everyday we’re here. Let’s do the tourist thing already!

stupa attack

There were about 10 people at the top of Borobudur when we got there at 0450. Some were a bit too loud considering the time of day and place. More arrived as we waited for the sunrise. But it was easy to avoid them – just go to the west side of the temple. We also saw a famous face with her family.

more stupas

The sun came up and slowly revealed the stupas. I can’t describe how magical it was. At first all was dark, then outlines, then more details until suddenly Borobudur was bathed in a soft golden glow. For the life of me I can’t say what time exactly the sun came up. One minute I couldn’t see anything and kept stepping into puddles, the next minute I could see!

stupas

I was excited to see Mt. Merapi in the distance. It even looked like there was some smoke coming out the top (not in this pic).

hairy and ghostly

In between all the scenery shots, we also took some of ourselves. Friends, meet Hairy Leg and Ghostly Leg.

sunup

MC took this shot. It’s one of my favourites of the whole trip. Anyway around 0630 we were done taking pics and the whole temple was beginning to be overrun by tourists and schoolkids (gila awal!). Our tummies were rumbling anyway and we knew a buffet brekkie was waiting a short walk away. So we said goodbye to Borobudur and touched its warm stones for the last time. G’bye.
